The Future of Resident Evil is in Our Hands. Let’s Not Mess this Up! [Update: Survey Concluded]

og:image:,

Resident Evil has obviously been on my mind A LOT lately. I played through a pretty good chunk of the series in the past 6 months in preparation for the remake of Resident Evil 2 and luckily, that game turned out to be a wet dream for any fan of classic Resident Evil. It drew inspiration from elements that made the action-focused entries in the series such a hit while remaining faithful to the design that shaped the genre from the very beginning. Between the excellent soft reboot that was Resident Evil 7 and this masterful remake of a classic, I couldn’t be happier about the direction the series is headed.

Luckily, it seems like Capcom might feel the same way. They have made a lot of wonderful decisions in the past few years across multiple franchises and it seems like we might be entering a new golden era for the company. Case and point, the company seems very interested in learning more about how the public feels about the newest entry in the Resident Evil franchise and they have asked fans to take a short survey. As a huge fan, I am doing my small part to boost the signal by asking you to do the same in hopes that we might help shape the future of the series.

These surveys may not seem important but we have seen them work before. Remember the rating system used across missions in several of the Assassin’s Creed games? The strategy may have taken a different form but the end goal was the same: to find out what fans liked and disliked about their games. From those results, we saw the series take some incredible leaps forward. I would argue that the series is better than it has ever been. I am not a supporter of development by committee because I don’t think developers should pander to their audiences wishes; Doing so can compromise the creative vision of a game. But answering some baseline questions about a series and how you feel about everything from camera to overall game design philosophy can have a huge impact and help shape the future of the franchise so that more people can enjoy it for years to come.

I know this has been nothing more than a long-winded plea to take a survey but this is one of those rare opportunities you have to gently nudge a series in the right direction. To give the developers some constructive feedback and positive reinforcement. If you are one of the many people out there (like myself) who find themselves dreaming about what a Resident Evil 3 remake or Resident Evil 8 might look like in a post RE7 and Remake 2 world, don’t let this chance pass you by. It takes 3 - 5 minutes. Don’t be lazy.
