This was my first trip into the world of E3, and I would have to say it was a success of massive proportions. This trip was quite the adventure, with a bunch of surprising announcements (from Nintendo), and a bunch of shitty announcements (from Konami). While there were plenty of fun demos and amazing videos, E3 was certainly plagued with some VERY underwhelming (amount of booth babes) games and game footage.
So let's start with our...
Along with the lack of FF7 HD, FFXIII Versus, The Last Guardian, a presentable Konami conference, and the blatant lie each major development company told about their products, it is pretty hard to choose between them all for my greatest dissapointment.
But watch me do it anyway.
Medal of Honor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam, Call of Duty: Black ops.
All three, at once.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare set a precedent in FPS gaming. It was impossible not to fall in love with CoD at the time, for it was too impressive of a game to pass up. Now it seems that we will forever be plagued by recreating the same formula over and over again. I love FPS games, and I do enjoy all three of the franchises listed above, but we are going to start seeing the EXACT same game recreated over and over. Starting this year, DICE and Activision are going to begin bleeding their franchises dry in attempts to become number one in the online FPS gaming genre. How disappointing...
Game of the Show (NON PLAYABLE): Rock Band 3 Display
Capable of playing with your own midi drum set, guitar, bass or keyboard. Chord recognition along with 2000 songs available to learn with a real instrument. This award doesn't need much explaining for Rock Band 3 is going to revive and reinvent music in children, teens and adults everywhere. When a video game is capable of not only providing entertainment but also providing musical lessons... it's a win-win for everyone. Best of all, this completely puts Activision to shame.
Game of the Show (PLAYABLE): Sonic Colors
To be honest, I could very easily make this the biggest surprise of show as well.
OK everyone, stick with me on this...
Sonic with little to no story.
Sonic with writing from the people who brought you MadWorld and Happy Tree Friends.
Sonic with NOTHING but fast paced levels. Did you hear me?
This is a 3D Sonic game that is NOTHING but fast paced levels. A game with zones, replayable levels, no casinos and NO extra characters. You are Sonic, you get to the end of the level, you save some little animal like things.
I rest my case.
Biggest Surprise: Nintendo
With games such as Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby, Zelda, and Kid Icarus being announced along with the 3DS, it was fairly easy to say, without a doubt, that Nintendo took the show this year. So many games that have been loved for years being reimagined, or recreated, all announced at once. Nintendo knew what they were doing this year, and while Sony and Microsoft would love to be able to pretend they had a great show, Nintendo didn't give us one montage or commercial. All Nintendo gave us was PURE video gaming bliss. Nintendo, the company that started this horrible trend, is going back to its roots with multiple games which will no doubt induce multiple orgasms nation wide. Thank you Nintendo, for staying true. I should have never doubted you.
