Being a huge Fallout fan I've been looking forward to the release of Fallout: New Vegas ever since it was announced.  Lucky for me I was able to get some hands-on time with the game today to see how I might be spending the next 100+ hours of my life once it hits stores.

Fallout: New Vegas brings us a new main character, a new story and a new location. However, other than that you would be hard pressed to find very much thats different from Fallout 3.

New Vegas itself, as a location, looks pretty good although some of the more iconic Vegas locations were noticeably missing from the demo I played.  Some look-alike fabrications were present but if you're looking for a re-envisioning of the real Vegas as it would appear after the apocalypse then I'm afraid you are going to be disappointed.  From what I've seen so far Fallout 3 did a much better job of taking a real world location, in that case Washington D.C., and giving it the Mad Max makeover.  Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas seems like a complete fabrication than any known location.  Perhaps it really is a "new" vegas after all.

The game also sports a new command wheel for companions so that you can give them certain standing orders such as follow or stay away, keep distance or keep close, act aggressive or act passive.  The wheel works well but also takes away any semblance of individual personality that the characters might have had.  Dialogue options remain but there was a certain realism about having companions that would sometimes act in unexpected ways. In any case I think it  to fit the general feeling of an apocalyptic waste land.

All other aspects of the game remain unchanged from Fallout 3. The VATS system remains the same, quests and dialogue trees seem the same and even a few art assets will be instantly recognizable.  Ultimately I felt like I was playing an expansion of Fallout 3 rather than an entire new game. Even the dismemberment and damage mechanic remains identical.

If anything renders it as a new game it would be the scope.  The explorable area is the same as Capital Wasteland with a comparable amount of main story and side missions according to the developers that I spoke to.

Still, I was hoping for something much more new.  I loved Fallout 3, but after logging over 120 hours in that game I'm not so sure if I'm ready to make that type of commitment to something that doesn't stray that far from the the root.

I liked Fallout 3 a lot, but I was kinda hoping this would be a little more different. More of the same isn't necessarily a bad thing, I guess I was hoping more for a Fallout 4, not an expansion.

The reason why they can't use as many real locations is because of copyrights. All the government buildings in DC are free to be used however.

Fallout 3 was such a unique experience that a similar one with a different story is well worth seeing. I don't really care how similar it is to FO3.

Oh, and keep in mind, this Vegas is based off of 50's Vegas. Alternate reality 50's Vegas...after a nuclear apocalypse.

I'm probably one of the few people saying this, but I'm actually sad to hear it's so similar. I have a few but very big issues with Fallout 3 (most prominently being that I found the overall world just very bland and boring and after 20 hours of commitment, in an attempt to find the gem that everyone else seemed to see it as, I began to hate it oh so much). So I can't really touch Fallout 3 anymore with pure rage throbbing at my fingers, tempting me into throwing the controller into my television.

So hearing New Vegas is basically Fallout 3 really saddens me. I still hold out some hope as I really hope the world is able to capture my interest, so in the end I'm still going to rent this game. I hope I am not disappointed, but I plan for the worst.

Why can't Bethesda just give us a new Elder Scrolls?

Uhm, what about the double the amount of new weapons or the weapon customization by buying mods to upgrade them. Or the new 'hardcore' mode ?
Those are, at least in my opinion, enough reasons to call this a new game on itself rather than an expansion pack...

I dont mind that it is so close to Fallout 3. The only thing I wanted them to do was to fix the janky animations...which they didn't do. It's a minor complaint, but it would have been nice. Regardless, I am extremely anxious for this game...day one buy for me.

Ya'know I was saddened by what you had seen environmentally wise. I, like many others I would assume, was pumped to be casually moseying past the Bellagio's fountain as it was spewing radiation.

Other then that I am pleased with what you found worthy to post about and will probably be putting another hundred plus hours into this game.

Thanks for your hard work at E3 Joseph, I appreciate it

Thats a little disappointing, I was really hoping this New Fallout would be more then a "Feels-like-a-DLC" but its more Fallout so I can't really complain.

Honestly, the whole "companion wheel" complaint doesn't make much sense to me. How does it remove individuality from your followers? You have almost the same exact options in Fallout 3, except instead of it being done as conveniently as in New Vegas those options could only be accessed through dialog with your companion.

Also, making them act a little less erratic isn't too bad of a thing in my opinion, it was a pain in the ass keeping them alive with them constantly running off to start a fight with a random enemies in the opposite direction. It was only bearable once you were able to get them a good suit of armor to protect their goofy asses.

Anyway, as Tarantula, it seems like you over looked a lot of things that make New Vegas feel newer and less like simply an expansion.

Im a huge fan of this site, and the Fallout series..Although I respect you're point of and everything, you seem to have failed to realise, or maybe forgotten that A: The Fallout series is set in the 50's and B: Las Vegas wasnt built until after WW2, and though WW2 did happen in this universe, although we advanced technologically, we didnt advance socially, so surely Las Vegas WOULD look different, right? Also, am I right in thinking that some of the buildings in Las Vegas are copyright so therefore cant be used in games without permission, while the building in DC dont have copyright? Just a thought...

I was really looking forward to New Vegas when I first heard about it. Then I heard the news that it would be using the same engine as Fallout 3. I was immediately turned off. I know that Bethesda's engine translated Fallout from a a top down sort of RPG to an FPS really well, but everything looked so bland and boring. I know it's a wasteland ravaged my nuclear war, but in the original Fallout games, I was never tired of the world. I got so tired of looking at dilapidated building after dilapidated building, and the same exact looking dilapidated building.

Besides that, like Joseph said, there really isn't a drastic change in the gameplay this time around. There are some new elements, but they could end up sucking, and they're not entirely new. You could always command your companions to a degree; I don't think this wheel will make it THAT much different.

I agree, it feels like New Vegas is an expansion rather than a completely new gameplay experience. I doubt I'll buy it.

    Still needs coop too.

Good article joeseph. I think that new vegas being almost the same as fallout 3 with a few tweeks here and there can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing. Personally even though from what i have heard i am still excited for this game. I loved fallout 3 and this game will be that much better especially with the edition of hardcore mode. Yes it may seem to some as just another expansion but, i have seen many games that have been considered "new" games but were really just the same thing, like gears of war 2, halo 3, and actually fallout 2. I respect your opinion and not trying to attack you or anything. I respect your opinion and if you are not so sure than hey, there is always the rental option :)

The differences between fallout 1 and 2 were minor. I expected the same from New Vegas.

That the engine is similar isn't important, what I want is story and depth of character. If there's one thing Fallout 3 lacked, it was character. Oblivion did, in my opinion, a much better of job of characterisation. Hopefully New Vegas (Under a different studio, known for its characters but not its engines) will meet my expectations.

i really loved fallout 3. I logged over 300 hours in playing it. I replayed that game over and over. I loved it. F:NV looks like a awesome games. I'm sorta sad that they arn't straying that far from the path that they set with Fallout 3. Though I'm pretty sure that the new location, new weapons, new weapon attachments, and hardcore mode will make that feeling go away. All i hope is that the characters are more realistic. In the last game, persuasion wasn't that good. All you did was have high speech and ask a question and it was up to chance whether you got the information or not. I am hoping that the persuasion actually "feels" like you are trying to get something out of them. I'm not gonna lose any sleep if that doesn't happen though.

What is this guy talking about? damage is totally different, then again he probably wouldn't notice the difference being as there wouldn't be high level armors in the demo. But there is an aspect to damage that wasn't present in fallout 3, called the damage threshold. This means if the initial damage of a gun doesn't surpass the damage threshold of an armor, the gun won't do any damage at all. For example, say i had a pistol that did 10 damage, and the damage threshold for some armor is 20 against small arms, no damage will be dealt at all.

As far as not being identical to new vegas today, well duh. Not only was it supposed to be based after a 50's feel, the creators clearly state that vegas wasn't hit by the bombs nearly as hard, and that is actually part of the new story.
