Fans of XCOM, rejoice. 2K Marin, also known as "the guys who made Bioshock 2," have just announced The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a dramatic new turn for the franchise.

The Bureau tells the story of the XCOM organization's beginnings, when it existed not for the purpose of fighting aliens, but as a defense against the Soviet Union. Told from the perspective of special agent William Carter, the game is a third-person tactical shooter where "every command can mean the difference between life and death for Carter, his squad and mankind."

No pressure.

Though Declassified will not feature the same turn-based mechanic featured in Enemy Unknown, this former FPS will feature real-time squad commands ala the Brothers in Arms and Ghost Recon franchises.  This origin story will also feature the same side missions, capture and research mechanics featured in the original vision of the game.  Leaked screenshots from last October were confirmed as well by 2K to be authentic in their depiction of the shift in development, albeit they were quick to point out that what was shown was quite unpolished.

The announcement came packaged with a few screenshots and a surprisingly gripping live-action trailer, both of which are absolutely worth a look.

You can expect to see The Bureau: XCOM Declassified on store shelves August 20th in America and August 23rd everywhere else in the world.

I've gotta admit I'm really excited for this game almost purely because of aesthetics. Men in Black in the 60's? Fuck yes. I also like the shift from the FPS system to an apparently more tactical one. This could be pretty cool.

It looks like a unique shooter. As long as they still make the TBS XCOM games and keep the focus on those then I will be happy. I would not mind picking this up.

That trailer was amazing, I think I'll wait till gameplay before deciding to pick this up.

This game looked fantastic as an FPS back at E3 2011. I'm eager to see how it translated over to third person. Either way, if you are a fan of XCOM and a fan of unique visions of established genres, keep this one in your sights.
