Yesterday we brought you word that the reveal of the inevitable sixth entry in the Resident Evil series would take place today, January 19th.  I pointed to a viral marketing site run by a firm contracted with Capcom and a Resident Evil-oriented event taking place today in San Francisco.  I was fearful that I'd have even more egg on my face after mistaking that fake trailer for a real one when Sony launched their Resident Evil Retribution film trailer late last night.  Luckily I don't have to do that.

Revealed by an IGN reader this afternoon, Resident Evil 6 is indeed a thing that is happening.  Set for release on November 20th of this year, Resident Evil 6 will star Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong and several of the series' primary characters in a game that is quite unlike the previous core entries.  Each of the three primary characters will have separate storylines (similar in manner to how the on-rails Chronicles titles worked) that will eventually coalesce in the later part of the game.  Chris and Leon will also have different partners that are unnamed at this time.  Players will also unlock a fourth protagonist after completing the previous character's storylines. Story details of the game are not confirmed at this time but given the viral marketing campaign at NoHopeLeft.com it seems to suggest that the nightmare scenario of a T-virus or Palagas/Uroboros outbreak spreading beyond quarantine has occurred.

Update to the story: Resident Evil 6 is a globe-trotting adventure in which bio-terrorists have struck several locations including a major Chinese city, a small American town called Tall Oaks that's not unlike Raccoon City, and another unnamed, potentially European town.  Chris Redfield tackles the Chinese infection, Leon Kennedy is sent in to investigate Tall Oaks (population ~70,000) and our new, unnamed protagonist, who is a mercenary, handles the third location.  Each infected site seems different from its counterparts.  The Chinese and European outbreaks seem reminiscent of the outbreaks seen in the previous two games while the Tall Oaks infection is quite similar to the traditional T/G virus scenario.  Redfield is teamed up with an unnamed male subordination, Leon looks to have a female survivor who possibly works for the Executive Branch which may explain why the President was infected and the mercenary has a female companion that, vocally, sounds quite similar to either Ashley Graham or Rebecca Chambers.

More details will be found here as they are announced.

As excited as i am, i am still disappointed. I was hoping for a reboot of the series. Co-op is great, but i think the series has lost what made it great it the beginning. Maybe just maybe we'll get a David and Nick cast again. Also if there is any Boulder punching in this game i will flip my shit.

I'm not one bit excited about this next game, as i've always thought of the resident evil series as one big zombie killing joke that never really seems to get better in terms of the storyline and writing.

Also, i'm not convinced that Capcom still has the chops to make a really good game anymore since their last few games have had re-releases just to nickel and dime their customers into giving them more money.

Is this different that the 'Scenario' set up in res 1 and 2, where you play as different characters during the same time?

RE6 looks a lot more action oriented and a lot more story oriented as well. Three characters on three different locations seems interesting, but will all three stories somehow connect down the line is gonna be a factor in my opinion. Can't just have three separate stories that don't connect, just seems weird if they go that direction. Another thing, is the girl that was with the new character, third guy shown, Ashley? Not sure, but they sure sound alike.

So excited, especially since it comes out two days after my Birthday. Take everything away from me, Capcom.

Looks good to me but like every trailer like this the "gameplay" sections could easily be scripted or canned. So not going to jump out of my seat for this. Also I'm a little worried that this is going to steal some (maybe most, if not all) of Operation Raccoon City's thunder. I'm sure they'll play differently enough but revealing a game that looks this action packed is going to make people choose between one or the other. Maybe they'll be OK in the end, but doesn't really seem like smart marketing to me.

Looks like they're using Resident Evil Revelations episodic setup. Different teams in different areas fighting different things. And I see Mr. Mercenary is voiced by good ol' Troy Baker.

I don't know what to say about this game. It looks great, but I doubt that it'll come this year.

Oh wow, I really like this trai--GODDAMMIT ASHLEY!

Though in all seriousness, the fact that Jill or A. Wesker didn't make an appearance is making me a little worried. Both of them should have some focus in this game...I'll admit this too, Leon with scruff is hella-weird to look at after RE4..

Is it possible that the new character in that trailer is Steve from Code Veronica?

I'm ready for this. I love Resi to death and I will definitely be buying this day. But, I do kind of wish they would sort of go somewhere else with the series.

I must admit, I'm disappointed in that the Redfield everyone was talking about was Chris. But at least its good to see a whole new character in the usual line-up. I'm looking forward to finding out who the the secret fourth protagonist is.

Actually, I didn't think I would be excited for this but after watching the trailer I'm pretty pumped and when I think about there wasn't one numbered Resident Evil title I didn't really like, even the ones everyone seemed to dislike such as 5 and 0.
